Mem D. Bernstein
Mem Dryan Bernstein – venture philanthropist – is the Chairman of The AVI CHAI Foundation, a leader in Jewish education; and a trustee of both Keren Keshet – The Rainbow Foundation, whose signature project, Nextbook, promotes Jewish literature, culture, and ideas through the Jewish Encounters books series, and its website, www.tabletmag.com; and The Tikvah Fund, which supports programs and projects that educate Jewish intellectual, political, and religious leaders in Israel and the Diaspora.
Arthur W. Fried
Mr. Fried retired as a Managing Director and CFO of Lehman Brothers in 1981 to become the CEO of The Rothschild Foundation, Jerusalem/Geneva, a position he held until November 1999. Thereafter, he served until December 2012, as Chairman and CEO of The AVI CHAI Foundation funded by the Estate of Zalman C. Bernstein.
Dr. Meir Buzaglo
Meir Buzaglo is a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the Hebrew University. He received a B.S. in Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy of Science (“Cum Laude”), an M.S. in Mathematics (“Cum Laude”), and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Hebrew University. He has written three books: The Logic of Concept Expansion (Cambridge University Press, 2002); Solomon Maimon: Monism, Skepticism and Mathematics (Pittsburgh University Press, 2002); Until the Day Prevails (Reuven Mass, 2007); and A Language for the Faithful (Mandel-Keter Press, 2009).
Lauren K. Merkin
A graduate of Bryn Mawyr College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s MBA Program, Lauren K. Merkin worked for CBS and as Managing Editor of Elsevier Science Publishing Co. in the United States. In addition to her role as a Trustee of The AVI CHAI Foundation, she serves on the Boards of the Columbia/Barnard Hillel, the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, and American Friends of the Israel Museum.
A day school graduate, she has four children and lives with her husband Ezra in New York City.
Dr. Avital Darmon
Avital Darmon was born in Jerusalem and lives in Kfar Adumim. She holds a doctorate in biology (1985) and a teaching certificate (1988) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 2004 to 2017 she was the founding director of the Initiative for Applied Education Research, a unit of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The Initiative is responsible for the educational consulting services that the Academy provides to the Government of Israel and various authorities. Dr.
George Rohr
George Rohr is Founder and President of NCH Capital Inc. Since 1993 the NCH group of funds have been investing across asset classes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union on behalf of their institutional clients. George began investing in the region shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and was among the earliest Western participants in the privatization opportunities offered by several of the region’s markets. His interest in the Region began as the result of a publishing-related opportunity he pursued in Russia in 1991.
Alan R. Feld
Mr. Feld was named a Senior Managing Director of Bernstein’s private client business in 2000.
In 1999, Mr. Feld founded Bernstein’s Wealth Management Group, which specializes in the complex issues facing high-net-worth private clients. Mr. Feld joined Bernstein in 1987 as a financial advisor, was appointed vice president in 1989, and was named a managing director in 1992. Mr. Feld earned a BA from Queens College and an MBA from New York University. He is a CPA and a member of the Personal Financial Planning division of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Lief D. Rosenblatt
Lief D. Rosenblatt, having retired in 2010 from a more than 30 year career on Wall Street, is engaged full-time in philanthropic and Jewish communal service activities. He serves as the President of his synagogue, Temple Israel of the City of New York, as well as a member of the AIPAC National Council (2011-2012). He is also a Trustee of The AVI CHAI Foundation, as well as Chairman Emeritus and ongoing board member of the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA.
Dr. Ruth R. Wisse
Ruth R. Wisse has been Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University since 1993. Before that she taught at McGill University where she helped to found the Jewish Studies Department. She was President of the Association for Jewish Studies, 1985-88. She has also taught at Stanford University, New York University, Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and the Max Weinreich Center of YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
